Our Beaches and other Attractions

Disclosure Statement
The property owners have created this list as a courtesy for our guests, there is no financial association with any of these vendors or attractions and we assume no responsibility in regards to the quality of services you receive or the conditions of the setting during your visit.

Where do you find the best beaches in the Dominican Republic?… At the north coast and more specifically in Samana. This peninsula has more than 30 kilometers of beaches, smaller and bigger ones. We will make a tour with you starting in Las Terrenas. Hereunder a list of the most famous beaches here… but between these beaches, you will other beaches… Private and unknown beaches...

Playa Las Ballenas

Playa Las Ballenas is around 2 km long and goes up to center Las Terrenas. At Playa Las Ballenas you will find bars, restaurants, villas, hotels, and a sailing club. At the end of Playa Las Ballenas, you will find a spectacular location, where the river is coming into the sea. Here you will find the sailing club as well. Somewhere in the middle, just in front of Hotel Cacao, you can buy fresh fish and lobster, every morning, directly from the local fishermen. It is five minutes walking distance from Villa Clarissa V and fifteen to twenty minutes by car from Villa Lomamar..

Playa Bonita

Playa Bonita is in Las Terrenas around 1.5 km long and is directly connected with Playa Coson. You will find several villa resorts here, famous French restaurants and hotels. On one side you will find the famous rocks in the water, very quiet to swim in. Further down you will get the restaurants and bars. It is ten minutes by car from Villa Clarissa V and Villa Lomamar.

Playa Coson

Playa Coson has around 6 km of beach. it is just minutes away from the town of Las Terrenas. You will find several private villas here, some restaurants like Casa Coson and Luis, the Wyndham hotel, and the Los Nomadas villa resort. Somewhere in the middle “The most beautiful bar from the world”… At this location 2 rivers come together and go over into the ocean. Whatever picture you take here is part of paradise… The mixture of the colder water from the mountains streaming into the ocean gives some strange light over your pictures… Caution is recommended with children due to strong current and at times dangerous waves. It is located five minutes by car from Villa Lomamar and ten to fifteen minutes by car from Villa Clarissa V.

Playa Punta Popi

Playa Punta Popi also center town Las Terrenas, is also several miles long, and if you like you can walk up to El Portillo, more than 6 km long. Bars, restaurants, hotels, lounges, kite surfing, and music. It is ten to fifteen minutes walking from Villa Clarissa V and ten to fifteen minutes by car from Villa Lomamar.

Playa El Portillo

Playa El Portillo is where the Gran Bahia Hotel is located and is directly connected with Punta Popi. You just walk and walk and walk on both sides… The beaches in and around El Portillo have white sand, which is very special in Samana. It is located about fifteen minutes by car from Villa Clarissa V and Villa Lomamar.

Playa Moron

Playa Moron is more isolated and after El Limon, you have some sandy roads in total around 5km. Ask several times which road you need to take because it's hidden and very nice. Waves and currents are strong, caution with children. It is located about thirty minutes by car from Villa Clarissa and Villa Lomamar.

Playa Las Canas

Playa Las Canas is on the same road, next to Lanze del Norte, only 1 km further. Some will take a 4×4 car or quad! But it's worth it!

Playa Jackson

Playa Jackson is next to El Catey and can only be reached by boat, footer by Dunky… The easiest way is to take a boat from Las Terrenas. Playa Jackson is a totally secluded beach enclosed by 2 rocks. Spectacular white sandy beach with coconuts and a large cliff in the back. There are no restaurants so take your food with you.

Playa Aleman/Estillero

Playa Aleman/Estillero is located in a small bay and can be reached over a good sandy road from around 2km. Several villa and apartment projects are here. Very quiet. This beach is connected with El Limon beach with more than 3 km of beach.

Playa El Limón

Playa El Limon has around 2 km of beach and can be reached over a sandy road from around 2.5 km. There is one apartment project at this moment so it is a very quiet beach.

Playa Ermitanio

Playa Ermitanio is difficult to come to. It's only possible by boat or Dunky… Very isolated beach… You feel like Robinson… But a dream beach, a small paradise. So, if you have a chance go there, research well the conditions of the ocean.

Playa El Valle

Playa El Valle has 1.2 km of beach and can be reached over a sandy road from around 10 km. Better take a 4×4. Very nice, secluded beach enclosed by mountains. Fresh fish and fresh lobster can be bought here directly at the beach at the small Dominican restaurants. The road from an to El Valle is very spectacular. Defined by its name, el Valle (the Valley) is located between 2 mountains. The waves can be very big, depending on the season, and fantastic for surfing. It is a possible to swim in the sea, but maybe better in the small river for children for example. This beach has a lot of current and waves that can be dangerous for children

Playa Rincon

Playa Rincon: The main part stretches for 4 kilometers and there is another part separated by a small peninsula which, although smaller, is even prettier and more secluded. What makes Playa Rincon or Rincon Bay beach this remarkable. Good sand, thousands of palm trees, azure-colored waters, and a spectacular setting surrounded by mountains. Also, there are no motels, hotels or condos and the only commercial establishments are several small restaurants serving freshly caught fish, lobsters, and local fare. You can get to Rincon by boat from Las Galeras or rent a car, ATV or moto. Real authentic native experience. When you finish with Rincon, there are other fine beaches nearby, including Colorado, Madama, Fronton, and Playita. Try them all.

Playa Colorado

Playa Colorado is next to Playa Rincon. Small but very nice beach. It’s made up of 2 parts: one private (but you can swim there even if there are a lot of waves), and another totally wild and undeveloped one. No restaurants on this beach, so you better take your lunch with you.

Playa Playita

Playa Playita, Samana is a very small but very nice beach in Las Galeras, with a small restaurant. Very quiet and good access. As you see in the picture a quiet and sandy dream beach. Different lagoons, coconuts everywhere, and a small Dominican bar where you can have fruit juices, beers, etc.… Beautiful beach - recommended.

Playa Las Galeras

Playa Las Galeras, Samana is the main beach here. Just at the end of the road. You cannot miss it and when you don't stop your car you end up in the ocean!!! Restaurants, bars, boat rental, etc. From here on you can take a water taxi for example to Playa Rincon, Playa Colorado or Playa Madame. Also, a place to buy fresh fish and lobster directly from the local fishermen. You can get to Rincon by boat from Las Galeras or rent a car, ATV or moto. Real authentic native experience. When you finish with Rincon, there are other fine beaches nearby, including Colorado, Madama, Fronton, and Playita. Try them all.

Playa Madama

Playa Madama is a very nice (and one of my favorites) and small secluded beach around 4 km from Las Galeras over a bad road by quad, motor, donkey, or by foot. They even say there is a hidden treasure under the water. For a tour of pure nature, beach, cliffs… You need to do this. Playa Madame is a few kilometers away from Las Galeras downtown. You can get there by boat or walking 30 min in the tropical forest. This is a little beach, but totally natural with no developments! The lagoons are perfect for swimming and the sand is white and pink! You can also explore the caves (don’t forget your flashlight!) No restaurant at this beach, so take your lunch with you! Playa Fronton also tops the beach but is also difficult to reach. You can reach it by boat from Las Galeras, or walking – but this is a 2-hour trek in the jungle. Don’t forget your diving masks and snorkels; this beach is perfect for discovering fish and coral reefs. We suggest going to this beach early because at 3 pm the sun does not hit the beach anymore, as there is a big mountain behind it. Close to Playa Fronton is “the nose from the Devil”, a spectacular piece of nature which you have to see as well.

Other Attractions

Cayo Levantado Island

A gorgeous public beach lies on the western third of this lush island, 7km from Samaná, the only section that's open to the public (a five-star hotel occupies the rest). Boatmen at the pier make the trip for RD$250 per person round-trip; groups up to 15 people can negotiate a private full-day boat round-trip for RD$3000. Note that the idyll can be somewhat marred by the commercialization of the experience. Touts wander the sands looking for tourists wanting to have their photographs taken with exotic animals, some endangered and on leashes, such as parrots, boa constrictors, monkeys, and even sea lions. Large cruise ships dock here regularly, and the facilities, including a few restaurants and bars, don’t offer much peace and quiet. If you choose to visit, try going mid-to-late afternoon, when most of the activity is winding down.

Cascade Salto del Limón, Las Terrenas

Tucked away in the surprisingly rough landscape, surrounded by peaks covered in lush greenery, is the 52m-high El Limón waterfall. A beautiful swimming hole at the bottom can be a perfect spot to wash off the sweat and mud from the trip here, though it’s often too deep and cold for a dip. The departure point is the small town of El Limón, only a half-hour from Las Terrenas. Just about everyone who visits does so on horseback, and almost a dozen parades (horseback-riding operations) in town and on the highway toward Samaná offer tours (though it is not recommended to hire someone off the street, as there’s little saving and the service is consistently substandard). All outfits offer essentially the same thing: a 30- to 60-minute ride up the hill to the waterfalls, 30 to 60 minutes to take a dip and enjoy the scene, and a 30- to 60-minute return trip, with lunch at the end. Your guide – who you should tip – will be walking, not riding, which can feel a little weird but is the custom. Walking or on horseback, you will get wet as there are several river crossings along the way – rubber sandals are a good idea. Spanish-owned Santí, at the main intersection in El Limón, is a good choice but also the most expensive. The lunch is excellent and the guides and staff (all adults) are better paid than elsewhere (though that doesn’t make them any more professional). If you book with a tour company in Las Terrenas, transportation to/from El Limón is often not included (guagua RD$50). Typically the tour (horse, guide, and lunch) costs per person from US$35 to US$50. Most other operators charge around RD$650/300 with/without lunch; try Parada la Manzana, 5 km east of El Limón toward Samaná, which has the added advantage – depending on your perspective – of being much closer to the falls as well as offering a pleasant new bar for cocktails, Apple Bar. Tours may also be booked from Las Terrenas, some of which include transportation to El Limón by quad bikes, followed by the standard horseback ride and lunch (US$55); try Casa de Las Terrenas. Otherwise, it’s a minimum 40-minute walk (from the main intersection in El Limón it's roughly 5.6km), up to a sometimes very steep trail over rough terrain and with even a river or two to ford. It’s not difficult to follow the path once you find it, though, especially if there are groups out on the trail. If you do make the trip independently you'll need to pay the entrance fee (RD$50). Address: Distrito El Limón, El Limón 32000, Dominican Republic.

Los Haitises National Park

Las Terrenas might not be that close to the Parque Nacional Los Haitises, but since so few independent travelers make it to Sabana de la Mar, the closest entrance to the park, Las Terrenas has become a popular place to book trips there. Flora Tours is a recommended operator, but virtually every company in town offers excursions to Los Haitises, though generally only twice a week unless you are part of a group of six or more, in which case you can arrange trips at your own convenience. There should be at least one company with a tour on offer five days a week, but schedules change, so it’s best to book as soon as you arrive in town. Taino Park-Taino Park is the biggest historic park in the Caribbean. A huge reproduction of Taino's life and the confrontation with the Spanish conquerors. An incredible scenography with figures in Fiberglass at the real scale. A trip of more than one hour. You seem to be in a movie at this time. Culture and attraction for a unique concept of the thematic park.
